How to improve your AI search visibility (and the tools that help)
Improving AI search visibility is mostly good fundamentals done in order: be reachable, be clear, be credible, answer real questions and then measure. A few free tools cover most of what you need to start.
Short answer
Make sure search and AI crawlers can reach your site, say clearly who you are and where you work, answer your buyers' questions directly, earn genuine third-party evidence and test what AI says with a fixed set of prompts. Nobody can guarantee a mention, so measure rather than assume.
The steps, in order
- Reachable: check robots.txt and hosting settings do not block the crawlers you want, and that key pages load without login or heavy scripts.
- Indexed: confirm your pages are indexed in Google and Bing, with a sitemap submitted to each.
- Clear: state what you do, who you serve and where on your home and service pages.
- Consistent: keep business details the same on your website, Google Business Profile and directories.
- Answering: write answer-first pages for the questions buyers ask, including costs and limits.
- Corroborated: collect genuine reviews and mentions from other sources.
- Measured: record a baseline and test the same prompts each month.
Tools by job
- Google Search Console (free): shows which queries and pages get impressions and clicks, and any indexing problems.
- Bing Webmaster Tools (free): shows how your site is indexed in Bing, which matters because other search and AI tools draw on the wider web.
- Site crawlers and audit tools: find broken pages, redirect problems and missing metadata.
- Structured-data validators, including Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema.org validator: check your markup is valid.
- AI prompt tracking: a manual spreadsheet is enough to start. Paid trackers automate it, but treat their results as samples because AI answers vary.
- AI Visibility Meter (free): a first-pass check of your public website for access, clarity and trust signals.
What tools cannot tell you
No tool can tell you what an AI platform will say to every buyer. Answers vary by platform, wording, location and date. A score or dashboard is a prompt to look closer, not proof of visibility.
How to measure progress
- Search Console impressions and clicks for your key pages and questions.
- A fixed list of 10 to 20 buyer prompts, asked monthly and recorded: were you named, who was, which sources were cited.
- Referral traffic from AI platforms where your analytics can identify it.
- Qualified enquiries and calls, with attribution limits stated honestly.
FAQ
Questions.
How do I improve my visibility in AI search?
Be reachable by crawlers, indexed in Google and Bing, clear about who you are and where you work, direct in answering buyer questions and backed by genuine third-party evidence. Then test with real prompts.
Which tools should a small business start with?
Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, a structured-data validator and a simple spreadsheet of buyer prompts. Add the free AI Visibility Meter for a first-pass check.
Do I need a paid AI visibility tracker?
Not to start. A monthly manual prompt log shows most of what you need. Paid trackers save time at scale, but their results are samples.
How long does it take to see an effect?
Expect months. Technical fixes can show quickly, while reputation and third-party signals build gradually.
